It is the aim of the Forgotten Diggers organisation to identify those World War I Diggers in New South Wales who, for whatever reason, either did not qualify for, or who’s families did not apply for, a Commonwealth funded memorial and, as a result, are lying in unmarked
graves. Once the circumstances of their situation is established, it is our aim to provide a headstone with a bronze plaque to commemorate and acknowledge their service to Australia and Freedom.
These memorials will be funded through donations from the public, Commercial Sponsors, Benefactors, Philanthropists and, where available, Government or Private Sector grants.
Why are we doing it?
Last member of a family with no near relatives.
May have moved interstate and have no known local family.
Were estranged from family – often through Shell Shock and/or excessive use of alcohol.
Family was unaware that they had to apply for a War Grave
Family may have lacked sufficient education to apply and were not offered assistance to do so.
Ineligible for Commonwealth Funded war grave (cause of death not deemed War related).
Family couldn’t afford headstone at time of death.
Adversarial process with DVA. Determinations often subjective and may have related to pension or medical claims
